Purple Mangosteen

A friend at work recently shared a bag of Purple Mangosteens with a few of us during lunch. The Mangosteens were a deep, rich purple with the most interesting leaves and juicy fruit segments.

A friend at work had been buying Donut Peaches for weeks. I saw larger ones in Kensington Market one Saturday and picked a few up. They were delicious!

This past Sunday I finally found the time to bake carrot cupcakes topped with cream cheese icing. The cupcakes were lighter versions of carrot cake and the icing more fragrant with the addition of lemon zest.

This was a large Pomelo that I picked up recently. I was sure that I had eaten them as a kid, but I couldn’t remember what they tasted like. In my mind I thought that they must have been similar to a grapefruit in taste and texture. In reality the Pomelo was like a very large, mild, slightly floral grapefruit without the mess of excessive juice, which made it convenient to peel and eat. I had expected the pith/peel to be thick as well, but it wasn’t. The membrane did need to be peeled before eating, though. It would have been too bitter and fibrous otherwise.

I picked up this small head of frilly cabbage at St. Lawrence Market. I kind of had an idea of what I wanted to cook with it, but mostly bought it because it was adorable. It will accompany bowls of Udon noodle soup one night for dinner this week.
